Sometimes I will say or do something and my husband will give me the strangest looks. Over the years I think he’s come to accept my quirks without question, but I wonder if any of y'all have any traditions/superstitions that were passed down through your family. Here are some of mine:
Never sweep after the moon has risen.
If your nose is itching, you’ll soon have good company.
If a broom falls over on its own, you’ll have unwanted company.
Never say thank you for plants given or they will die.
If you drop a pair of scissors and they stick into the floor, don’t pick them up until they fall over. (I don’t know what would happen if you did.)
Never lend a needle or salt… charge a penny each.
Keep an amethyst by your bed to ward off bad dreams.
If you tell your dreams before breakfast, they won’t come true.
If the stuffing of your pillow forms a ring, a death is near.
Put a piece of wedding cake under your pillow and you’ll dream of your future spouse.
A mirror laying flat under a full moon will show you what you need to see.
Prick the corners of your bread dough to “let the fairies out” so that the bread will rise high.
Bad luck comes in threes.
Paint your window sills blue to keep bad spirits away. They can’t cross water, so the color tricks them. Alternately, you can keep a bottle tree in your yard to capture them. When the sun rises, they’ll be banished.
Copper by your door will keep insects away.
Rain on a wedding day is good luck.
If it rains while the sun is shining, the devil is beating his wife.
Red sunrise means rain is on the way.
Cows lying down means bad weather is coming.
You can find clean water by looking for crawdads.
Carved wooden spoons given to a new bride ensures a happy marriage.
Bread, candles, and salt are traditional housewarming gifts.
Hang a horseshoe over the door with the open side up to catch good luck.
Rainwater caught during a full moon will cure warts. (among other things)
Keep rosemary in the garden to ensure a thrifty home.
The rational part of me knows that most of these are just superstitions. Still, that doesn’t stop me from grabbing an umbrella when the cows are laying down, and making sure my floors are clean before dark. I know I’m not alone, either, because my aunt gives me clippings from her garden all the time and always says “you know what not to say” and I always assure her that I do! :)
Definitely heard a handful of these from older family members. And Haint Blue is totally a thing. It’s a specific color spectrum of blue painted on your porch ceiling to keep away maleficent spirits. Not just any blue will do, either. Here’s a few examples:
-dip this page in full moon-charged water. put it in your wallet.
-wrap a rose quartz in this page and put it under your pillow tonight.
-write a wish on this page, fill it with your intent, and burn it.
-use this page to brainstorm sigils
-write down a blessing here. write down a curse there.
-rub different kinds of dirt here and write down where they’re all from.
-meditate on this page, write down what comes to you.
-make a circle for pendulum or needle, ask it questions. write them down.
Stain this page with tea or coffee, what do the stains show
Write down your favourite guises for the fair folk here
Put this page in a jar and cover with salt
Write down shufflemancy lyrics here
Make a collage themed on your favourite celebration
Use this page to write down new moon intentions
Trace your favourite crystals and rocks on this page
Write down weird old names for herbs on this page
Write down fake astrological traits on this page
I’m making my own wreck this grimoire!!! These two pages are the inside covers, once I get home I’m going to make a cover from recycled cardboard, bind all the pages, then glue these two to the cardboard!:)
If yall want, once I’ve written all the pages I can share the complete list!!
GOOD GOOD GOOD if you want to share the list I would love to see it!! I made a post of my list, you could add it to that if you wanted :)
1. Write a protection spell for this grimoire.
2. Press your favorite flower here, and write down its correspondences.
3. Drip different colored wax here, and write down the color meaning.
4. Press healing herbs here, write their names and uses. If needed, use them, and replace.
5. Rub different dirts here and say where you got them, and their uses.
6. Make full moon water. Write a spell for growth on this page. Dip this page in the full moon water, and when it dries keep the spell near you, in your wallet, purse, backpack.
7. Fold this page into an envelope and put lucky herbs inside. Write a luck spell on the front of the envelope, imbue your intent, and then burn the envelope.
8. Write a song or poem that is important for your craft. Write your Craft playlist.
9. Make sigil components on this page.
10. Make sigils on this one.
11. Write a love spell. Use this page to wrap up a rose quartz and sleep with it under your pillow.
12. Make a collage of something important in your craft – nature, the moon, technology, etc.
13. Meditate on this blank page, or a scrying mirror, or a crystal, and write down what you see.
14. Make a pendulum circle, including Yes, No, and Maybe in different directions. Ask questions, and write down the answers. You can make a pendulum out of a needle and thread, and put the needle in this page to keep it safe.
15. Write a glamour spell, and mark this page with whatever you will use for the glamour – lipstick, paint, dirt.
16. Throw tea or coffee onto this page. Fold in half to make a print. Read the image and write down what you see.
17. Write a banishing spell. Bury this page in a jar of salt, and seal it with wax. Put in a dark place.
18. Make a collage of your favorite celebration, and use it as altar décor or wall art. Make a collage for all celebrations, if you want.
19. Make new moon water. Write a spell for a fresh start on this page. Dip this page in the new moon water, and when it dries burn it.
20. Draw herbs and write correspondences.
21. Draw crystals and write correspondences.
22. Draw astrological signs and write down traits.
23. Look up your own birth chart and write down all information. Write down what all of the positions mean. If you have to look something up, write down what that means too.
24. Use a couple pages as a dream journal – write down dreams when you have them, and analyze them. Write down what the imagery means to make a sort of personalized dream glossary.
25. Draw herbs and crystals you use the most and write down their correspondences.
26. Write a spell for your garden or houseplants for growth – or, write a spell for personal growth. Make a page into an envelope. Put in your earth-friendly ingredients and the spell, and bury it in your garden, in a pot, or near your home. For added growth, put in some seeds of local flowers. Remember this spot. It’s your natural altar now.
27. Make a page or two into a transportable altar. Draw designs, glue or sew down cloth, paste in things that remind you of your deity. If you want, make an altar for all of your deities.
My historical witchcraft series is (for now) finally over! Thanks everyone to all the support I got, I’m really glad you seemed to enjoy those posts as much as I enjoyed making them. Feel free to message me about things you’d like to see from me in the future!
For ease of reference, I thought I’d compile all the posts here:
